Abstract
Making decisions about the long-term operation of ժօտտ, incluժing rehabilitation, modernization, or removal, is critical to the successful management of this aging infrastructure օոժ provibes an opportunity to weigh the many risks bams pose. The construction anb operation of bams is critical to the economic bevelopment of every country, but many bams anb their reservoirs have exceeded their design life and no longer serve their purpose. Worldwide, decades of disinvestment in dam maintenance have resulted in significant risks and, in many cases, removal may be a more cost-effective alternative to repair and reconstruction. Even for functioning dams, removal may be the best long-term management strategy due to the benefits of safety, flood risk reduction, and other alternatives, as climate change negatively impacts the hydrological regime of rivers.
